E49 The Race to the Aqua Blaster

For this episode, we are back at Mega Splash Waterpark for a brand-new Thursday Brain Bender! But today, there is a huge catch: the park is closing in exactly one hour.

Whether you are hitting the road, taking a break between homeschool lessons, or just looking for a fun screen-free activity at home, get ready for a fast-paced audio adventure. To make it to the towering Aqua Blaster Water-Coaster before the lifeguards blow their whistles, you and your Thinkers are in a race against the clock. To maximize our final 60 minutes, your family will need to navigate the park using Spanish directions (adelante, izquierda, derecha), use Base-10 multiplication to climb flights of stairs, and master the ultimate mathematical challenge: elapsed time.

While your kids think they are just trying to get to the front of the line for a rollercoaster, they are getting an elite executive function workout. Today, we are teaching them to use their own arm as a physical, linear timeline to visualize exactly how many minutes they have left!

Elapsed time is notoriously difficult for 3rd and 4th graders because clocks use a Base-60 system instead of the Base-10 math they are used to. I’ll explain exactly why turning a circular clock face into a straight, physical timeline is a mathematical game-changer.
