When introducing fractions, most traditional activities rely on round circular models. However, circle wedges require complex angular estimation that young brains find difficult to divide equally!

In Episode 63 of Raising Thinkers, we take our listeners to The Pixel Pizza Parlor, where every pizza is a square (un cuadrado)! Why square partitioning? Slicing a square vertically and horizontally creates clean, equal rectangular halves and square fourths. It's easier for children to use as future models to compare and visualize the differences between different fractions.

In this episode, you'll also engage in some flexible mental computation. When tasked with finding total toppings for a 4-slice order, kids explore multiple ways to decompose numbers—skip-counting by 10s or combining addends (8 + 12 = 20 and 16 + 4 = 20). By helping children see that there's more than one way to solve a problem, it facilitates risk taking. There isn't just one way to solve a problem, there are many ways. This lowers the bar to help them try to tackle a given scenario, even if they haven't mastered a particular strategy yet.

We will also begin to dig into exploring what happens when an odd quantity (like 15 peppers) is split across 2 halves. This lays early intuition for division and remainders.

Something to Try at Home:

Hand your child 15 grapes or pretzel sticks and ask them to divide them equally onto 2 plates without cutting any pieces. Ask them: "What is the closest we can get to splitting them up equally, and what happens to the leftover piece?"
