When early elementary children encounter three-number addition problems such as 5 + 4 + 6, their default reflex is often to count up one-by-one on their fingers.

Teaching children to scan for compatible numbers that add up to 10 (4 + 6 = 10) unlocks the commutative property of addition and builds true mental flexibility. This also helps them to build upon their benchmark facts.

In Episode 68 of Raising Thinkers, K–2 listeners head into the golden autumn forest to help Sammy the squirrel prepare for winter!

How We Build These Mathematical Skills:

  • Making Benchmark Tens: Kids reorder jump distances to make 10s first, then add on additional addends.
  • 3D Positional Geometry: Listeners use their hands to navigate over mossy logs, under low oak branches, up tree trunks, and down into cozy hollows.
  • Missing Addends & Bridge to 100: Kids solve missing burrow stashes and calculate how many more acorns Sammy needs to reach 100 using benchmark compensation.
  • Dual-Language Integration: Practice el invierno (winter), guardar (to store or put away), la ardilla (squirrel), and las bellotas (acorns) out loud.
