When upper-elementary students learn fractions solely as shaded parts of a static picture or pie charts, they often struggle when encountering fractions of collections or sets.

Understanding how to partition a set of items, like finding two-thirds of 27, requires a crucial cognitive shift called unitizing: dividing by the denominator to find one part, then multiplying by the numerator to scale up.

In Episode 69 of Raising Thinkers, 3rd–5th grade listeners head up to the Alpine Wilderness Reserve to track Bella, a mama grizzly bear, as she prepares herself and her cub for winter hibernation.

How We Build Mathematical Fluency and Flexibility:

  • Mental Compensation Across Zeros: When calculating remaining weight goals, kids avoid mechanical borrowing algorithms by "counting up" through friendly benchmarks.
  • Set-Model Fractions: Listeners split a riverbank harvest of 36 salmon by dividing into fractional parts for Bella and her cub.
  • Simplifying Fractions & Unitizing: Kids convert weight-gain fractions to calculate total weight gained from a particular amount of fish and evaluate remaining targets.
